Exercising Graceful Activities

Economy, Diligence, Fidelity, and Faith

In Part I, we started by working on repelling different forms of negativity that can choke our spiritual gardens, pulling weeds, if you will; and in Part II, we explored ways to cultivate and nourish a set of positive attitudes that will provide a fertile soil for spiritual growth. Now in Part III, we will consider some elements of a sincere life by examining a set of grace-filled activities that bring substance and character to our spiritual walk: economy in expenditure, diligence in appointed service, fidelity to every trust, and a childlike faith in God. These four disciplines will engender genuine peace and harmony, some of the first fruits from a flourishing spiritual garden.

You will note that this section of our daily prayer, “A Morning Resolve,” also contains two additional activities: generosity in giving and carefulness in conversation. Of course, these are important, formative activities, too, but we have already discussed them in detail in earlier chapters. As my father would say, “There’s no need to repeat the obvious.” While I didn’t always like all the advice my dad would send my way, I think, in this case, he was right. He usually was.
